Premier league referees are costing English teams in Europe

Premier league was known to be the best league in the world for the quality of football it delivered to the viewers. The referees had a major role in ensuring that the standard was maintained keeping within the rules of the game. But lately that hasn't been the case.

No English team had reached the quarterfinals in European competitions this year. What could be the reason for that? Quality of players? Money? Managers? No! PL is still the richest and the most popular league in the world. The problem is the substandard refereeing.

Last night we saw a player being sent off for mistaken identity. Shocking, right? This has been that type of season for the referees. The number of poor decision by the officials have increased significantly and they are sadly deciding the outcomes of the matches. The players, managers and the supporters are left irritated and frustrated after almost every other
match because of the wrong decisions made during the game by the officials. These mistakes are not only affecting the teams in the league but also the deteriorated quality of football in Europe.

Refereeing itself is a very difficult job and refereeing a premier league game, when the whole world is watching you and is waiting for an opportunity to criticize any small mistake made during the match could be very stressful for the referees. After all they are human beings.

How to improve the refereeing standards in EPL? - is the big question. Referees are put under a lot of pressure by the supporters, managers and players. Adding technology in their arsenal to deal with the pressure wouldn't be a bad idea. Most of the sports around the world now use video reviews in case there is any doubt about the original decision. Why can't this be used in the premier league? Technology is invented to make the life of human easier & less stressful and no one needs it more than the EPL referees.

Giving the teams two or three reviews, like in cricket and field hockey, per game would certainly help the referees and reduce a little pressure on them. Implementing new and improved training methods could also be influential in improving their performance. Whatever the FA decides, we love watching EPL and supporting our teams. We want to see them compete and win at the highest level and make us happy.
